Caroline Moncur was 52 when she died of pancreatic cancer, just days short of her son Sam’s 15th birthday.

Now the Harlington Upper student has his sights set on raising £5,000. “I want to help in any way possible,” he said. “Whether it’s to bring out a new treatment or to support other families who are going through what we went through in 2015.”

Sam works at Yummies in Mill Hill on a Sunday and – after his boss agreed – the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund supplied him with a collection box for the counter.

The talented skater, who has an older brother, is doing the charity challenge on June 11 – a propitious date as it was his Mum’s birthday.

“She was just amazing,” he recalled. “She lit up every room she walked into and made everyone smile.

“She always encouraged me to do my best and said ‘You can do whatever you want in life as long as you work hard for it.’

“That’s what’s inspired me to aim for a career in law.”
