The East of England Ambulance Service received a call at 11.52am and two ambulance crews, an ambulance officer and East Anglian Air Ambulance turned up to find the pair in an overturned car.

They treated an elderly woman who had chest and abdomen pain and an elderly man who had cuts and bruises.

Both were taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital for further treatment. Their injuries were described as minor.

Eye witness Lester O’Halloran said it was fortunate no shoppers had been hurt as the accident had happened on the crossing outside the main doors of the supermarket.

He added: “The crash involved only one car. An elderly lady was driving through the car park when for an unknown reason she lost control of her car and crashed into a barrier! Her car then rolled over and she was trapped.

“Crews took about 45 minutes to free the woman and she was taken to hospital. Bystanders were confused as to how such an incident happened in a car park!”
