The Guardian reported the outbreak among a group of teenagers from Hampshire, who travelled on the Wizz Air flight from Heraklion to Luton Airport on Tuesday, August 25.

One of the youngsters affected, 18-year-old Ben Pearce, told the Guardian that NHS test and trace call handlers had contacted him multiple times since Friday - but none had asked for his flight details.

He said: “Even though I’ve filled out my details on three separate phone calls, they always seem to say I’ve got nothing on my file.

“The phone calls never seem to serve any purpose other than they [the call handler] have been told they need to call you.”

Wizz Air has stated 212 people were travelling on the flight and "relevant health authorities" have been informed.

A Department for Health and Social Care spokesman insisted the Test and Trace system was meeting its responsibilities.

He said: "Hundreds of thousands of people are being tested every day and to make sure we stay in control of this virus, we are targeting our testing capacity at the areas that need it most, including those where there is an outbreak as well as prioritising at-risk groups."
