It was around 10.20pm on Tuesday that the silver Volkswagen Golf failed to stop when signalled to pull over by police. Shortly afterwards the car crashed into the shop in High Town Road.

Sadly, Wanessa was pronounced dead at the scene. One man was airlifted to hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.

Two other men believed to have been travelling in the vehicle have also been identified. One has been treated for minor injuries.

The fatal collision is being investigated by the Beds, Cambs and Herts road policing unit.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will carry out a separate investigation into the actions of the officer prior to the collision.

Assistant Chief Constable Mike Colbourne said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the friends and family of this young girl who has died in such tragic circumstances. We have specialist officers supporting the families of the girl and the injured parties during this difficult time.

“We are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision and I would urge anyone who saw what happened, or the vehicle prior to the collision, to call police.”

The road has remained closed today for investigations to be carried out, however it is due to be re-opened shortly.
