Warm tributes to fundraiser

Heartfelt tributes have been pouring in for a Luton businessman who was instrumental in raising funding for the Luon & Dunstable Hospital’s Macmillan Cancer Unit.

David Simons, 83, who has died of cancer, was also a staunch supporter of Keech Hospice Care.

An L&D spokesperson said: “David went above and beyond throughout the Macmillan appeal, which raised £3.5 million.

“We would like to convey our sincerest thanks and appreciation for his hard work and amazing contribution which helped provide excellent cancer services for our patients and their families.”

A Keech spokesperson added: “David was a much valued member of our fundraising committee. He was always fully committed to everything he did for Keech and we will remember him as being a happy, delightful and friendly gentleman.”

Mr Simons, who left school at 14, joined Ellis & Goldstein (known as Eastex) as a machinist and worked his way up to managing director.

He married his wife Sheila in Luton in 1954 and they have two daughters, two grandchildren and a great grandson.

Daughters Beverley and Karen said: “He was such a strong, caring character. He was the greatest and the best.”
