What does the future hold for Vauxhall site?

The site between Luton and Dunstable is adjacent to land being eyed by the controversial Bushwood Green group for the development of 5,000 homes.

Vauxhall confirmed this week that the distribution and storage site was up for sale.

Central Bedfordshire councillor Richard Stay, whose ward covers Chaul End, said the company had approached the council to talk about the green belt site.

He said the Vauxhall was keen to be involved with the ‘neighbourhood plan’ for Caddington and Slip End, a pilot project under the Localism Bill.

“I have to congratulate Vauxhall for coming to us very early on and saying they wanted to sit down and see what this site could be used for,” he said.

“We are delighted that they are talking to us in the context of our neighbourhood plan.”

Cllr Stay said he thought the site – thought to be around 30 hectares in size – could accommodate up to 450 houses, but added: “We are not even going to be talking about that. It could be mixed use, it could be older people’s houses, it could be employment opportunities.”
