Working together at Love Luton half marathon

The volunteers helped marshal the event that saw a record number of runners take part.

Runners started at Stockwood Park Athletics Centre and finished in the town centre, taking in part of the Luton Hoo Estate.

Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, Luton Borough Council’s volunteer scheme, Signposts, Sea Cadets Luton, Stopsley Baptist Church, Stopsley Strides, Tesco, The Rotary Club of Luton and the University of Bedfordshire supported the event,

Signposts community development manager, Phyl Rainey, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that so many volunteers from all over the town came to support this fantastic event,

“It was a great example of what can be achieved when different communities come together.”

Arriva donated a bus and a driver to transport the volunteers around the town and Tesco donated food and water.

Karen Linley, Tesco’s area community champion, said: “Every Tesco store in Luton and Dunstable donated so we could provide 2000 bottles of water and a packed lunch for 130 marshals.

“We also sent a team of volunteers to be marshals on the day at the water stations. It was a great community event.”

Andrew Inskip from Bedford and County Athletic Club won the male category with a time of 1:14:28 and Nina Griffith was the first female across the line with a time of 1:22:57.

Linsey Frostick, chairperson for Love Luton, said: “The third Love Luton half marathon was the best so far, it really showed our town off at its finest with people coming from far and wide to compete.

“The atmosphere at the finish line was fantastic and the feedback from those running has been incredible.”
