From 3 August, the Government's Eat Out to Help Out Scheme will go live.

Using the scheme - designed to restart the hospitality sector after months of coronavirus battling lockdown - those who opt to enjoy a meal in town rather than settling for staying in will be able to get 50 per cent off food and non-alcoholic drinks.

Announcing the initiative as part of his "mini budget" earlier in July, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said, “I know people are cautious about going out. But we wouldn’t have lifted the restrictions if we didn’t think we could do so, safely.

“Each week in August, businesses can then claim the money back, with the funds in their bank account within five working days.”

Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 3 and 31 August 2020, food fans will be able to get 50 per cent off food and non-alcoholic drinks at participating restaurants, up to a total of £10 per person.

You can take advantage of the scheme as many times as you like throughout the month. No vouchers are required, and establishments will claim the money back from the Government.  There is no minimum spend.

Which outlets are participating?

The scheme is equally open to large, chain restaurants as it is to smaller, more independent outlets.

The restaurant chains announced as taking part so far are as follows:

  • All Bar One
  • Browns
  • Burger King
  • Frankie & Benny’s
  • Harvester
  • Nando’s
  • Pizza Hut
  • Toby Carvery
  • Wagamama

If you want to know whether a small chain in your area is taking part, or if the independent restaurant on your street is involved, your best bet is to head to their social media channels. Failing that, get in contact with them directly, and they should be able to provide you all the information you need to know.

The Government is set to launch an online tool so people can easily search for eligible restaurants ahead of the launch.

Its website currently says this tool will be available "the week of 20 July," and will give results "within a 2 mile radius of the postcode you use."
