This is how many Covid vaccine doses each country has administered

As the UK continues its rollout of Covid vaccines, much has been made of the speed at which the government is administering its approved jabs.

The balance between vaccine supply and staffing levels is central to discussions of how fast the country can go in its effort to end the coronavirus pandemic.

Prime minister Boris Johnson set the target of vaccinating 15 million people across the UK by 15 February - recruiting the British army to assist with the rollout plan.

The UK has set the pace across Europe - but how does the country's efforts compare to the rest of the world?

Let's take a look.

How is Israel leading the world in administering the Covid vaccine?

Israel has a population of around nine million people but despite its small size it is leading the way in administering the Covid vaccine to its citizens.

Its Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was the first to receive BioNtech / Pfizer jab and he has since revealed that the country struck an agreement with the pharmaceutical company.

In exchange for data about the age, gender and medical history of those receiving the jab, including any side effects and efficacy, Israel received 10 million doses of the Pfizer jab.

In order to protect some privacy, no identifying information was given in the exchange.

As part of the deal, Pfizer promised shipments of between 400,000 and 700,000 doses every week, according to Politico.

How is the rest of Europe doing in its effort to administer the Covid vaccine?

It's been widely reported that the UK has administered more doses of the vaccine than many other European countries that remain in the European Union.

Figures from Our World In Data backup that argument when drawing comparisons between the UK (14.9) and countries like Italy (3.5), Germany (3.1) and France (2.4).

The EU has been criticised for the speed it has moved on acquiring coronavirus vaccines and the rollout across its member states.

The UK, for example, ordered 100 million doses of the vaccine produced by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford in May and approved it for use on 30 December.

The EU, in comparison, signed its deal with AstraZeneca / Oxford for 300 million doses in August and approved the vaccine on 29 January 2021.
