A medal rush for JKL at JSKA European Champs

Japanese Karate Luton (JKL) took a five member squad to Glasgow to compete in the second JSKA European Championships recently.

There were more than 25 countries participating, including Italy, Russia, Portugal, South Africa, Cyprus and Germany along with various Scottish and English clubs totalling approximately 320 competitors.

JKL, who were coached by Fred Daniels and Sabrina Daniels, saw Eammon Devane and Rachel Spiller compete in the senior category (22-39 years old) for the first time at European level, with both fighting at a high standard.

World champion Lisa Taylor achieved silver in individual kata and collected three European Champion titles in kumite for the female 15-17 year old category receiving a gold medal, with fellow squad member Fleur Harris obtaining silver in kumite in the same category in her first European competition.

Youngest squad member Feriel Siad picked up silver in the individual event after an amazing kata performance in the 13-14 year old female category in her first European competition. Together Lisa, Fleur and Feriel competed in the team kata 15-17 year old category and stole the show by becoming European Champions in this event and receiving gold medals.

JKL Technical Director, Sensei Fred Daniels, said: “After many months of preparation for this competition these results are fantastic for the club and individuals that participated and was a memorable experience for all who attended.”
