Behind the inevitable leading group of elite Kenyan runners, the televised event featured McDonnell in the chasing group containing the leading British road runners.

Fading slightly towards the end, he finished in a commendable 12th place in 29.28mins, agonisingly one second slower than his personable best.

However he did have the consolation of finishing in front of multiple world record holder from Ethiopia, Haile Gebrselassie.
