AWARDS: Quite a night for Luton’s sporting stars

Local dignitaries, event sponsors, the nominees and their supporters were welcomed by LSN chairman, Carl Richardson, who highlighted the work of the LSN and the support they provide to local sport, including funding in excess of £7,500 last year and the launch of a new Small Grants Scheme.

The 300 strong audience then listened to an inspiring speech from guest of honour, Megan Harris, former Bath rugby player and current Paralympic athlete, which detailed the highs and lows of her sporting career and her hopes to compete in the Coxless Four boat at the Olympics after a fractured neck injury almost ended her career.

The was also a presentation from Daryl Coffey from Join In, a national body to harness volunteers for sporting events and clubs.

The highlight of the evening was a new online poll this year, which totalled over 4,000 votes, and this elected 10-year-old badminton player, Nadeem Dalvi, as the first ever Sports Personality of the Year.

The prestigious Geoff Battlebury Service To Sport Award, which recognises an individual’s dedication and commitment to sport, was handed to Richard Everitt.

In addition, there was a Special Recognition Award presented to Clive Robins, former LSC/LSN chair since 2003.
