Back injury hits Luton’s hopes in home meeting

A SERIOUS back injury to a visiting athlete curtailed Luton AC’s third Southern Athletics League match of the season at Stockwood Park on Saturday.

The injury to a Nene Valley Harriers sprinter resulted in a two-hour break in the track events as the athlete lay on the track waiting for an ambulance to take him to hospital, and most of the remaining races had to be cancelled.

The incident meant a lot of Luton’s stronger events failed to take place, hitting their hopes of avoiding relegation.

The event however did lift them off the bottom and, with another home match to come, the team, supported by the Rotary Club, remain confident of avoiding the drop.

Nene Valley Harriers triumphed on the day, with Harrow second, Luton, led by acting men’s team manager Gerry Gough and women’s team manager Linda Bassill, third and Ashford fourth as a stiff headwind had a big effect on performances.
