Academy a big hit on their debut

A FEAST of boxing action was served up by the Academy ABC as it held its first-ever fight night at Stopsley Working Men’s Club earlier this month.

Thirteen bouts took place on the night, with raffles and other fundraising activities helping to raise well over £500 for Luton & Dunstable Hospital’s Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit.

The club has been running for just over two years and patron and former world champion boxer Billy Schwer, along with his father Billy Schwer Snr, former World champion Graham Earl, former British champion Mickey Cantwell and current Luton pro Michael Devine were in attendance.

Coach Graham Bell from the club said: “It was a great success and we raised £557.25 for the baby unit at the L&D Hospital.

“It was a fantastic night, all the coaches and staff at this club have been great in pulling together and getting this night off the ground.

“Most of all I would like to say a massive thanks to all the kids in the gym because without them we wouldn’t have a gym, they have all been training very hard for this night, so well done to them.

“Also Billy is a really big help for us, he comes down here and the kids all listen to him and they love to get in and train with Billy.”

The card included Tysie Gallagher, the only carded girl in Luton, Niall Curry, who had a great win in his first bout while also being named boxer of the night, and Josh Goodwin who also had a fine victory on his debut.

Shamrock ABC were in attendance along with clubs from St Austell in Cornwall, London and Stevenage.

The Academy are now hoping to hold a dinner show at the same venue on November 25.
