Callum Cleary and Scott McMaster have both made it to the semi-finals of the southern section of the National Youth Championships after progressing at an event in Aylesbury on Sunday.

Highly-rated youngster Cleary, 16, has been tipped to book his place in the 46-49kg category final.

McMaster, 17, is also eyeing silverware in the heavier 49-52kg division as the Academy chases its first national ABA title.

Coaches Graham Bell and Michael O’Regan are backing both boxers for glory on Saturday after successfully guiding them through the quarter-finals.

Bell said: “I really believe that both of them have got a chance to get to the final.

“They have done well to get this far and no matter what happens now they can be proud of what they have achieved. They are only one step away from a national title.

“Callum is the best technical boxer in the gym, but we have high hopes for the pair of them. There will be a few nerves, but they are both buzzing. It will be massive for the club if they can win.”

Both fighters are regulars at the Academy’s gym in New Bedford Road, which is run by volunteers.

The Academy’s next fundraising event is a dinner show on Saturday, March 8. Tickets for the fight night are £35 and more details are available from Bell on 07976 545993.
