Bobby George chalks up Irish win

OLYMPIC bronze medallist Bobby George made his long-awaited return to the ring with a comfortable 60-54 points victory over Billy Smith in Graigavon, Northern Ireland on Saturday night, writes Mark Wood.

It was only the Shamrock fighter’s second pro fight and his first since knocking out Lanquaye Wilson in Portsmouth almost two years ago.

The 28-year-old light welterweight had been left frustrated when his fight in Galway the week before was cancelled at the last minute.

The Bulgarian, real name Boris Georgiev, said: “After all the hard training I was disappointed when the show was cancelled and felt really low but then Mervyn Turner worked hard to get me on the Graigavon show.

“I really had an up and down couple of weeks, but still felt very sharp and strong.”
