Champion Conroy has his pride back

The 35-year-old went into the bout against champion Danny Goode with a record of five straight defeats, his latest just two months ago, that coming after a year-long absence from the sport due to injury.

He had been close to giving up, but agreed to take on his more experienced opponent and unexpectedly triumphed on points after eight rounds, to claim the belt.

Conroy said: “This fight wasn’t really for the money for me, it was for my own pride.

“I came back fighting in March against Jimmy Perrin, got stopped in the last and was on the verge of giving up.

“Then I got a phone call saying would I fight Danny Goode for the British Masters?

“The intention was I was going to be the journeyman which is what I do, get beat, but I had five weeks to prepare, so I thought I’d give it my best.”

With the fight looming, Conroy embarked on the toughest training regime than he had for any of his previous bouts and it paid off in style, while he is now looking to get back into the ring as soon as possible.
