George is hailed for ‘cross-over’ appeal after win

CROSS-OVER appeal will make Bobby George a huge star according to new promoter Dennis Hobson, writes Mark Wood.

Vegas is the aim for the Luton light welterweight after he destroyed Phil Boyle in just 2.54mins at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield on Saturday night, his first outing under the Hobson banner.

Hobson said: “He’s going to make a very big name very quickly in this country and he’s making a lot of friends.

“He’s got that cross-over which is a very special gift. He’s not just a great fighter, he’s got a cross-over that makes him very popular.

“He’s got a magnetism, people get captivated in the audience, they see something in front of them.

“I hate golf, I can’t play, but if someone is at the top of the tree I can watch it. So he’s got a cross-over where people aren’t boxing fans but will watch him.

“You know what’s so pleasurable about it, he’s got the talent, he’s got a great attitude and I’m working with proper people.

“I’ve been there and done the big stuff, it excites me and I’ve got the taste for it.

“Being involved with somebody like this kid, we’ve got a great possibility of getting back up there on the big stage, Vegas and stuff like that.

“There’s a lot more hard work to do but he’s got all the credentials and the pedigree and I’d like to say he’s got the right team behind him. It’s exciting times for us all.”

Like George’s trainer Mervyn Turner, Hobson would have liked to see the former Olympic bronze medallist in action for longer, but was enthused by his performance.

He continued: “It’s boxing like Bobby says, it can happen in the first seconds or it goes the distance.

“Merv didn’t ask him to go out there and take that kid out but he’s there, he’s a fighter, he showed rather than going through all the gears, he’s got that killer instinct.

“He was tense, a little bit eager.

“I don’t know whether he was just trying to overly impress but the class is there for all to see.

“There’s so much more, so many more gears to come out of him.”

Trainer Turner may now look to up George to eight rounds when he next fights on Shamrock’s big bout at the Bedford Corn Exchange on May 18.

He said: “I would have liked Bobby to go a little longer.

“I think the people were entertained. They saw a class fighter, although they didn’t see too much of him!

“But with class sometimes that happens. We would have liked to have given the people a bit more entertainment but when it comes it comes and you’ve got to take it.

“With a class act like Bobby you present him with an option, he’s going to take it.

“I would have liked him to get a bit more mileage on the clock before his fight in Bedford.

“But I think we’re going to go for, although it hasn’t been decided yet, a longer distance, perhaps step him up to eight, if the right opponent presents itself.

“We’ve got a couple of opponents in mind and the final decision will be made this week.

“We are going to look for a particular kind of fight and I think Dennis and I will sit down and take Bobby forward quite quickly.

“As we said at York Hall at his last fight, the kid’s got nothing to learn he’s adapted well to the professional game and it’s for Dennis and I to sit down and move him forward quite quickly.

“It’s just a case of getting the right fights.”

And Turner revealed that health problems for his wife had made George extra anxious going into the fight.

He added: “It was a difficult week for Bobby. His wife was taken into hospital but he showed his class and his focus and the dedication of the boy that he can come through something like that.

“His wife thankfully is perfectly fine now, there’s no problem at all. Again I think that contributed to his anxiousness.”
