New pro Conroy out to test boxing’s brightest prospects

The 33-year-old Lutonian boxed as an amateur between the ages of 14 and 16.

Finding himself overweight at 19st 12lb in April 2009 and suffering from bad health problems, he returned to the ring to help get himself into shape following the death of his father.

Conroy took part in ‘white collar’ fights but has now turned pro to earn more money as he wants to start a family in the next year.

Former Cardinal Newman pupil Conroy, originally from Leagrave and who now lives in Houghton Regis, admitted: “I went back into boxing because I was overweight.

“I lost eight stone in the last four years.”

Conroy, who trains at the Academy Luton and Peacock Gym in London, suffered a third round stoppage to Joe Duffy at the Camden Centre, Kings Cross, on his pro debut last month.

He is set to climb back into the ring on Saturday, June 29, against 26-year Diego Burton from Peckham, who has a record of two wins, one draw and one defeat.
