Sirmanis silenced as Mulhern claims solid triumph

A SOLID showing from Luton’s Danny Mulhern saw him score a unanimous 40-36 points victory over Latvian Olafs Sirmanis at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Sunday afternoon, writes Mark Wood.

The 22-year-old Graham Earl-trained fighter showed more punching power than on his debut victory over Sid Razak back in July at Luton’s Liquid nightclub as he made it two wins out of two in his fledgling pro career.

Mulhern weighed in for the four-round welterweight contest at 10st 3lb, while Sirmanis tipped the scales 9st 7lb 8oz.

The Lutonian started energetically and looked the more proficient fighter, although Sirmanis did connect with a good combo midway through the first round.

Continually on the front foot, Mulhern, originally Donegal, pressed home his advantage in the second. As well as boasting the physical advantage the Lutonian was also landing the cleaner shots and seemed to unsettle Sirmanis.

The third round proved an action-packed affair. Mulhern was the first to trouble his opponent, catching him with a good straight right before both were warned by referee Ken Curtis that it was a ‘boxing match not a wrestling match’.

However, Mulhern was given a scare when the Latvian caught him with a left and he stumbled to the ground, but the referee ruled it wasn’t a knockdown.

Mulhern responded with two good lefts to again stamp his dominance going into the last round.

The Earl boxer dominated the centre of the ring and was in complete control despite being pushed to the deck by his messy opponent who looked to spoil and hold at every opportunity.

Sirmanis replied to a Mulhern left hook with a nice left/right combination, but it was the Luton fighter that finished by far the stronger, producing a good left and, although another couple of good shots shook Sirmanis, Mulhern was unable to finish the job as he easily claimed the contest 40-36 and condemned Sirmanis to the second defeat of his two-fight career.
