Smith edged out on points

LUTON fighter James Smith went six rounds with unbeaten middleweight Wayne Alwan-Arab at the Millennium Hotel in Mayfair last Thursday before falling to a 60-54 points defeat.

The former Putteridge High School pupil took the fight at late notice but did himself proud in only his second professional fight. Having beaten journeyman Ryan Clark on his debut in July he pushed his 29-year-old opponent all the way as the Hackney fighter claimed the 14th win of his career.

Trainer Graham Earl had nothing but praise for his light middleweight fighter, saying: “He went straight from a four rounder to a six rounder against an unbeaten fighter. At first he was a little bit nervous against someone like that, but he really pushed the lad all the way.”
