Coyne is Hatters top choice

Super defender wins Player of the Season award

DEFENSIVE rock Chris Coyne scooped the Hatters' Player of the Season award during a ceremony at Vauxhall Recreation Centre on Sunday.

The dominant centre-half was honoured for his displays at the heart of an injury-struck rearguard where, with regular partner Russ Perret sidelined for much of the season, the 24-year-old played a vital role when pairing up with a number of different defensive partners.

One of the most popular awards of the night was Goal of the Season, which went to midfielder Matt Spring for his wonder-strike against arch-enemy Watford.

His 35-yard screamer dumped the Hornets out of the Worthington Cup.

Mick Harford was on hand to present the Players' Player of the Season award to goal ace Steve Howard.

As well as the nod from the dressing room, Howard was voted Internet Player of the Season by users of the Hatters website after again finishing top scorer for Luton Town with 23 goals in all competitions.

The striker also clinched the Luton News Player of the Season award for the second year running.

And Kevin Foley made it two-in-a-row when he again picked up the Young Player of the Season trophy, despite only making his first team debut this season.

The youngster drew praise from manager Joe Kinnear for his improvement.

The Young Members' Player of the Season went to Tony Thorpe.
