Beds bowler McGarry thrilled with Unicorns debut

BEDFORDSHIRE bowler Andy McGarry was back in the big time at the weekend after earning a call up to the Unicorns side for the Clydesdale Bank 40 clash with Gloucestershire at Exmouth, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 29-year-old, who made his first class debut for Essex back in 1999, was picked for the Unicorns, who are a side set up to give players without a contract the chance to showcase their talents.

Batting first, Unicorns posted a respectable 234-7 from their 40 overs, but then came up against Irish World Cup hero Kevin O’Brien, who battered 46 from 22 balls.

Fellow opener Alex Gidman went on to reach 104 not out, and McGarry, who sent down six overs for 47, admitted it was a bit of a reality check.

He said: “We thought that was going to be a very competitive score until Mr O’Brien and Gidman walked out and were 90-0 off eight (overs).

“That kind of changed the complexion of things a little bit.

“It’s an interesting challenge because you have to bowl in different ways and different lengths. It’s different to playing against the players I have been in Minor Counties and on the pitches we have.”
