Celebrations begin as Town & Indians cruise to league title

Luton Town and Indians secured the Saracens Herts Division One title – and promotion – with a game to spare thanks to a crushing win over Ampthill Town on Saturday.

For once, it was not Sachin Wagh at the heart of things but opening bat Adnan Bashir whose half-century anchored things for Luton around a middle-order collapse.

A useful 30 from number nine, Sajad Homyoon, helped them reach 185-9 off their 50 overs and set a useful score to defend.

That proved more than enough as the bowling attack ran through Ampthill with ease, skittling them out for just 55.

Mohammad Irshard and Al Mahmud Hasan took three wickets apiece with Wagh and former England international, Monty Panesar, each adding two more to allow the celebrations to commence.

Khizer Manzoor took 6-32 for the seconds against Datchworth in bowling them out for just 91.

However, they lost six wickets in chasing it down, giving Datchworth the bonus points needed to mean the second team can no longer achieve promotion.

Half-centuries from Fayaz Homyoon and Yousuf Alim helped the thirds to a 90 run victory over their counterparts from Welwyn Garden City and the fourth team completed a very successful Saturday with their 174 run victory over Kings Langley III securing promotion from Division Nine A.

Sunday was not as successful, for the firsts at least. With their defence of the Bedfordshire County Cricket League Premier Division crown ending last week, they completed the league season with a disappointing defeat to Eversholt in a rain-affected game.

Dunstable Town it was that succeeded them as champions winning the league by nine points from Lutonians.

The second team suffered their 12th defeat in just 14 completed matches as they finished bottom of Division One, this time losing by ten wickets to Potton Town.

Rain saw the thirds game abandoned but there was happier news for the fourth team who saw the Potton Town second team concede their game to them meaning they won promotion from Division Five.
