Deed leads from start to finish

Favourite Darren Deed led the 150-strong field from start to finish at the Luton 10km race at Luton Hoo last Sunday – the last race in the Luton AC Summer Road Race Series.

The Bedford & County AC runner traversed the undulating terrain in 31.16mins, a new course record by several minutes. Team-mate Richard Powell was next home in 34.38mins, followed by Stopsley Striders’ Adrian Copp in 36.03mins.

Striders’ Louise Peters continued her fine form, finishing a clear winner in 38.54mins ahead of Astrid McKeogh of North Herts Road Runners and Christine Lathwell of Luton AC.

The male veteran prizes went to David Green (V40), Bill Barrett (V60) and Mike Gallagher (V70) and the female awards to Alison Sugars (V35), Marianne Williamson (V40), Linda Thomasson (V45) and Lorraine Daglish (V50). The team winners in both men’s and ladies races were Stopsley Striders with Dunstable Road Runners picking up the veterans team prize.

Male series winner was Craig Halsey of Fairlands Valley in a cumulative time of 1.21.52hrs, Giles Shorley of Ampthill & Flitwick Flyers was second in 1.22.40hrs and Luton AC’s Stuart Still third in 1.24.29hrs.

The ladies competition was won by Louise Peters in 1.27.29hrs, Christine Lathwell was runner-up in 1.33.16hrs and Ellie Still third in 1.34.16hrs.

The veteran winners were Paul Halford of Boxfit and Williamson of Bedford Harriers, with Sean Still winning the junior prize.
