AFC Dunstable stay in hunt for runners-up spot

AFC started the stronger as Jermaine Hall had a good chance on six minutes, but put his effort wide. But AFC took the lead with a cross shot, as they did in the previous match, and it was Griffith who delivered it midway through the first half.

The second half mainly lived up to what went before in the first. It was not a spectacle but AFC tried their hardest to look for a second goal.

Heath decided to introduce the younger Carney on 75 minutes and his energy did start to pay dividends. With 80 minutes played the visitors finally made it 2-0 from the penalty spot, when Jonathan Cooper was pushed in the back as he headed towards goal. Up stepped Newman Carney to slot home.

Heath said afterwards: “The lads tried to play football but it was so hard and it was a great leveller to be fair. Runners up is still on as we move back up to third, but we need London Colney to slip up.”

Last Wednesday some controversial decisions and bad luck cost AFC three points against a very good Wembley side in a game which ended 1-1.

The home team got off to a wonderful start as a slick move involving Jermaine Hall and Jonathan Cooper resulted in Enzo Silvestri heading home from close range on six minutes.

But then a terrible mix up at the back saw Zaine Gangadeen nip in to draw Wembley level on the half hour.

AFC’s Cooper had the ball in the net before half time but the ref took play back for a free kick on Newman Carney. Manager Heath was sent from the dugouts for questioning the decision.

To make matters worse in the second half Josh Humbert was sent off for a push.

AFC host Holmer Green on Saturday and visit Sun Sports on Tuesday.
