AFC into Beds Senior Cup final after disqualification

AFC Dunstable have reached the final of the Beds Senior Cup after both Biggleswade Town and Beford were disqualified for fielding ineligible players.

Following investigations both sides, by their own admission, have been found guilty of the offence in their second round match last month which Biggleswade Town won 4-1.

The tie has been declared void and neither side will compete any further in the competition this season.

AFC had been due to meet Southern League Premier Division side Biggleswade in the semi-final tonight, but will now take their place in the final at Kenilworth Road against either Arlesey Town or Barton Rovers.

A club statement on AFC’s official website said: “While it is satisfying to reach a cup final, it is not the ideal way to have achieved it.

“We were really looking forward to testing ourselves against another Southern League Premier Division club in Biggleswade Town on Tuesday, to once again take on a team two steps above us.

“We have already knocked out two of the favourites for the competition in earlier rounds by defeating Luton Town at Kenilworth Road 1-0 and then by the same scoreline getting past Dunstable Town in the second round.

“We did fancy our chances on Tuesday and would have gone into the game pretty confident but it was taken out of our hands.

“We now go to Kenilworth Road for the second time this season for the final on March 15 and await the winners of the all Southern League Central Division tie between Arlesey Town and Barton Rovers who are the holders.

Meanwhile, AFC Dunstable slipped to third in the SSML Premier Division table after a weekend without a game, while Hoddeson Town saw off Sun Sports 3-0 to leapfrog Steve Heath’s side.

They now trail leaders London Colney by seven points with two games in hand, and entertain Tring Athletic in the league tonight.
