The 36-year-old, who has netted five times this season, started Jones’ first game in charge, before being restricted to a role on the bench since then.

Jones admitted there had been interested in the former Dagenham and Charlton front man, but that Benson showed during his cameo against Wycombe on Saturday, just what he could still offer to the side.

The boss said: “We had a couple of enquiries about Paul Benson, but it wasn’t the right time for him.

“We love him here Benno, he’s a valued member of the squad and is a good player.

“We don’t want Benno out of the football club, we don’t, we like Benno here.

“We brought in Joe (Pigott) who’s someone different, could be a foil for him or could be just a different option.

“I believe in Joe, but I know Benno, I’ve played against Benno and he’s done superbly.”
