Birthday boy Tony Burnett netted the only goal of the game as Dunstable Town beat Hertford Town 1-0 in the Molten Spartan SML Premier Division on Saturday.

Revamped Hertford battled valiantly to contain the Blues in one of Town’s tightest games of the season.

The visitors defended well and counter-attacked effectively as they improved massively on their 5-2 defeat to the Blues at Hertingfordbury Park earlier in the season.

The stubborn visitors made it extremely tough for the Blues and when Lee Roache did poke home a cross it was ruled offside.

Substitute Nick Jackson hit the bar, but it was a simple error that cost Hertford the game.

Having tightly marked top scorer Roache they neglected Burnett who was left to pick his spot from the edge of the area as he marked his birthday with the winner.

Unfazed Hertford continued to perform well with on-loan Luton keeper Lewis Kidd, who was at Dunstable earlier in the season, giving a good display.

Victory made it 32 league games unbeaten for Town, although they were made to work hard against a gallant Hertford side who belied their lowly position in the table.

Dunstable are now 13 points ahead of second-placed Aylesbury and 18 clear of Oxhey Jets in third, who have three games in hand.

Last night (Tuesday) Town were due to visit Berkhamsted, go to London Colney tomorrow (Thursday) and on Saturday head to Harefield United.

Blues: Taylor, Mills, Mead, Deaton, Leach, Olaleye (Buchanan), Carney, Burnett, Roache (Jackson), Frater, Christie. Subs not used: Bailey, Fontanelle, Head.
