Blues go back top after a flipping great victory

Leverstock Green 0 Dunstable Town 4

Dunstable Town regained top spot in the Molten Spartan SML Premier Division as they battered fifth-placed Leverstock Green 4-0 at Pancake Lane on Tuesday night.

The Blues moved ahead of Aylesbury United by a point and also have a game in hand ahead of their home clash against Harefield United on Saturday.

Soft rain made the pitch lively and the visitors soon settled into their attacking stride, but had to carefully monitor the hosts’ eagerness to counter-attack as they hit the post following an error by Fabio Bufano.

Midway through the first half Dunstable’s repeated attacks got their reward when Bufano atoned for his earlier effort by neatly flicking the Blues into the lead following a smart free-kick by Jonathan Barnett.

Dunstable looked comfortable on the ball and three minutes before the interval Burnett doubled the visitors’ advantage when he netted from distance.

The second half saw Leverstock attempt to redress the balance but their attacks were often haphazard.

Dunstable refused to ease up and poached a third goal when top scorer Lee Roache received the ball inside the area and turned to score from close range on 55 minutes, having earlier been thwarted by home keeper David Bailey in similar circumstances.

Blues refused to allow the home side to break effectively and with a couple of minutes to go substitute Chris Francis cut in from the right flank, where he had been very effective, and fired home from a narrow angle.

Director of football John McLoughlin said: “The plan was to get our top position in the league back which we did successfully and it was another great performance.

“Tony Burnett was outstanding, we were just on fire and they couldn’t get near us.”
