Blues hit five to stay at the top of the tree

Holmer Green 3 Dunstable Town 5

Dunstable retained top spot in the Molten Spartan SMLPremier Division with a 5-3 win at Holmer Green on Tuesday night, coincidentally, the same scoreline from last season.

Town were ahead on nine minutes when a long throw from Shane Wood practically landed on the goal line and was tapped home by Lee Roache.

The second arrived after 19 minutes when Danny Mead’s cross was headed in by Leon Cashman.

Green found a way back into the match when Fabio Bufano handled in the area and Dean Allen emphatically converted the spot kick.

Roache was tormenting the home defence with his artistry inside the penalty area and was somehow kept at bay as Dunstable cruised to the interval, well in control.

The dominance was swiftly reasserted on 50 minutes when Graeme Buchanan blasted a third goal, while Tony Burnett outjumped the defence soon afterwards to head the fourth.

It was 5-1 with 67 minutes on the clock as Nathan Frater earned his reward for some diligent play throughout.

The home side then showed commendable spirit to fight back as Paul Gilbert headed home, while Kieran Webb made it 5-3 with 12 minutes to play.

They couldn’t hit back any further though as Blues continued their fine start to the season.

Blues drew 1-1 against Oxhey Jets on Saturday thanks to a 39th-minute equaliser from Frater.
