Brentford have accepted a £9m bid from Championship rivals Bristol City for former Luton Town striker Andre Gray.

The 24-year-old, who had been a target for Hull City, is believed to be discussing personal terms with Steve Cotterill’s side.

Bristol City had been pursuing a deal for Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle, but the player opted against moving to Ashton Gate.

Gray scored in Brentford’s 4-2 victory over the Robins on Saturday.

The former Shrewsbury and Hinckley United forward joined the Bees from the Hatters last summer, and scored 18 goals as they reached the Sky Bet Championship play-offs.

Gray, who scored 57 goals in 111 games for the Hatters, didn’t start against Ipswich Town recently after all the transfer speculation, but was back in from the beginning on Saturday at Ashton Gate.

Although Brentford are rumoured to have offered their prize asset a new contract, with Premier League West Ham also meant to be monitoring the situation, there remains a strong chance Hatters could earn a £1m windfall before the transfer window closes, due to their sell-on clause.

Bristol City, who won the League One title and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2014-15, have lost both of their league games so far this season and were knocked out of the League Cup by Luton last Tuesday.
