AFC Dunstable scored late on to seal a 1-0 win over Beaconsfield SYCOB in their Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central meeting on Saturday.

With Beaconsfield harbouring thoughts of a play-off place themselves, the hosts knew they had to repel any such hopes, as a victory for the visitors would have put them six points behind AFC with a game in hand.

After receiving his red card last Saturday, Nathan Frater was starting his three match ban, so the only change saw BJ Christie recalled.

The Rams looked like they meant business, flying out of the traps, to put the AFC’s defence under extreme pressure early on and should have been two goals ahead within the first 15 minutes.

First a cracking strike smashed against AFC’s crossbar and then home keeper Garry Malone had to make a good save from Ollie Jones.

Slowly, Steve Heath’s side started to compete a lot better as the half wore on and quell any threat the visitors could muster.

AFC’s first chance came on 21 minutes, when a dangerous cross from Christie just eluded Jermaine Hall as neither side could be parted at the interval.

The second period carried on in the same vein as the end of the first, with both teams finding it hard to carve out any worthwhile chances.

While AFC finally saw more of the ball, both defences were rock solid and it looked like a share of the spoils was going to be the outcome.

However, with five minutes of normal time remaining, another dangerous cross from Christie saw Newman Carney net from close range.

The result keeps AFC in fifth place, five points above Kempston, who have two games in hand, as they visit Fleet Town on Saturday.

AFC: Malone, Massay, Murphy, Morgan, Cashman. Carney, Mannion (Humbert 74), Olaleye, Christie (Byron 90), Bishop, Hall.
