AFC Dunstable’s title hopes received a huge boost at the weekend as they went back to the top of the table with victory over Holmer Green.

With previous leaders Hoddesdon held 2-2 at home by Colney Heath, AFC, who still have two games in hand, leapfrogged their rivals on goal difference.

Meanwhile, third placed London Colney drew 0-0 at Cockfosters, meaning with seven games to play, the title is now in AFC’s hands.

Boss Steve Heath made one change, bringing in Terry Griffiths for Bill Morgan, as the game was the clash of the league’s top goalscorers, with BJ Christie (41) facing Dean Allen (36).

The opening exchanges of the game saw both teams cancel each other out, as Green went close when Allen’s shot was well saved by Ricky Perks.

After the break, AFC finally broke the deadlock on the hour mark as Newman Carney’s free kick was headed home by Leon Cashman.

With time running out, the visitors began to push forward as Perks was called into action again, tipping over Allen’s header.

Late on, the hosts had the perfect chance to seal victory when Christie was upended in the box, only to then see his penalty saved by Sam Butcher.

The visiting keeper then went upfield for a corner, with the ball ricocheting around AFC’s area until it was cleared by Cashman.

As Butcher tried to make his way to goal, Christie slotted his effort into the net for his 200th goal in AFC colours, securing a crucial three points.
