D'Ath has no regrets over his move to Luton

The 24-year-old, who signed an 18-month contract, made only his third start and fifth appearance in total on Saturday in the 2-1 defeat at Colchester.

It was also D’Ath’s first 90 minutes for over a year, since the Cobblers’ 1-1 draw against AFC Wimbledon on March 1.

When asked if he thought it was the wrong decision to move to Kenilworth Road on the back of his limited playing time so far, D’Ath said: “No, I don’t think so, I think when I have played, I’ve done well.

“Against Crewe, it was my first game in a long time, Hartlepool I thought I played well, and then today (Saturday) I think I’ve done all right.

“I was a bit quiet in the first 20 minutes, other than that I thought I did well. All I can do is keep doing what I can do and then I can’t pick the team.

“So it’s the manager’s choice and whatever he feels is best on that day against certain teams, then that’s what it will be.”

Prior to joining Luton, D’Ath had been sidelined at former club Northampton, only playing 124 minutes of football this term, featuring in four games, as he was frozen out by former Cobblers boss Rob Page.

He admitted it has led to an extremely difficult campaign personally, saying: “This season has probably been one of my worst seasons in football, it’s been so frustrating.

“So to finally get out there I was buzzing to play and show people what I can do.

“Hopefully I get more chances to do that and we start winning as a team.”

Despite his lack of first team action since arriving, D’Ath was quick to praise Luton chief Nathan Jones for the way he has kept him involved.

He continued: “The gaffer’s kept speaking to me so he’s been good that way.

“It’s not like I’ve been left out in the dark, he said, ‘be patient, be patient.’

“I’ve been working hard in training trying to get my place in the team and obviously we were going well before, so it was quite hard to get into the team.

“But hopefully now I’ve proved I’m more than capable of stepping up to the plate if needs be, but he picks the team and whatever it is we’ll go with that.”

D’Ath is determined to make it back-to-back starts when Blackpool, who went above Luton at the weekend, come to town on Saturday.

On whether he thought he would remain in boss Jones’ plans after his performance at Colchester, he added: “Well, we’ve lost the game haven’t we. If we come off winning that then I’d probably say yes, but I don’t know, the manager picks the team. All I can do is work as hard as I can and then what will be will be.

“It would mean everything, that’s what I’m paid to do, it’s what I feel like I’m born to do, so that’s what I’ll be striving for and if I get it, I get it and if I don’t, I’ll be patient again.”

On D’Ath’s display, Jones added: “I thought Lawson did very well, he was very impressive. We brought him in to play, but the side were in very good form, so he’s had to be patient, but he has been patient.

“He was excellent, showed an energy, showed a real desire to do well and I’m pleased for him.”
