Dunstable suffer Blues on a bad evening

Premier Division Cup St Margaretsbury 4 Dunstable Town 2

IT was a bad night for Dunstable Town as they threw away a two-goal lead to crash out of the Premier Division Cup at the semi-final stage with a 4-2 defeat at St Margaretsbury on Tuesday.

They also lost ground in the title race as Royston Town went three points clear with a 5-1 victory over Hatfield Town, although the Blues still have a game in hand.

Director of football John McLoughlin said: “We are disappointed at the result, however we made six changes to rest key players as our objective is to win the league.

“Nick Jackson and Mark Boyce got through 90 minutes and we gave Lee Burgoyne and Jermaine Hall a run out, but all said and done we were naive after going in at half time 2-0 up.

“It will do the lads good to feel defeat and hopefully this will help us react accordingly.”

The Blues had already beaten St Margaretsbury twice this season and led 2-0 against the run of play at the break through Craig Henney’s penalty and a welcome goal from Jackson, making his first start for many matches.

The home side had wasted a number of chances in the first half but put that right in the second.

Saints were level by the hour and were ahead after 75 minutes,, before marksman Leigh Rose completed his hat-trick eight minutes from time, with Martin Stickland the other scorer.
