Dunstable Town let lead slip to Slough

For the second successive game the hosts went into the interval with a promising lead only to let it slip.

There was almost a dramatic opener when, from a forced corner, Slough’s Henry lobbed towards goal and the ball nestled obligingly on the roof of the net.

The opening goal was well worked on 18 minutes. Jamale McKenzie-Lowe held up a forward ball well and he was able to pick out the eager Gary Wharton whose finish was sublime.

A fine bit of individualism from Marsh brought the second goal for Dunstable after 27 minutes following a corner.

He received the ball, controlled it well, turned and fired expertly beyond Williams and it looked like a comfortable home win was on the cards.

But Slough began to make inroads. From a throw-in, which was poorly defended, the ball fell opportunely for Adam Marin whose half volley found the top right corner, and they were back in the game before the break.

In the second half there was much about Slough’s play that suggested an equaliser would be inevitability.

From yet another conceded corner Billy Jefferys rose to equalise on 70 minutes. Slough were now dictating play and six minutes later the Blues were behind and the scorer was Gokmen whose hard work was deserving of a goal. He neatly converted a cross from Ryan Parsons.

The indefatigable Marsh shot just wide and Wharton still toiled, but it was increasingly more difficult for those in blue.

The last ten minutes brought the best Dunstable chances with a Marsh blocked shot after good work from Bailey. But Blackett was forced to concede a corner from a defensive header and there was no easing from Slough, who rather than defend their lead sought to increase it.

This they did, right in the last minute of normal time when Ed Smith added a fourth goal to underline a remarkable and creditable comeback for the visitors.

The Blues have the weekend off as they were due to play Hereford United, who have now left the league.

The final game of the campaign is the following Saturday, April 25, at home to Cambridge City.
