Barton Rovers slipped to their second Southern League Division One Central defeat of the season as they were beaten at home by Egham Town on Saturday,

Lee Bearman’s side went into the game missing eight regular first team players through injury, suspension or unavailability and the 16 named on the team sheet was the remainder of the squad.

Barton never came out of the blocks from the first whistle and were still half asleep when the visitors scored on nine minutes.

The hosts didn’t pick up their runners from a corner as an unmarked Brendan Mathew headed home at the back post.

Rovers did lift their tempo slightly afterwards, but never looked like scoring in the first period, although neither did Egham who were content to protect their slender lead.

After the break, Rovers awoke from their slumber as Mahmut Caglar and Jordan Davis both saw shots fly wide of the target.

At the other end, home shot stopper Kyle Forster was forced to make saves from Ollie Jones and Luke Neville to keep the score at 1-0.

Late on, Rovers had an excellent chance to equalise, but Elliot Bailey’s side foot effort was straight at keeper Jamie Norris who clung on.

Barton’s trip to Hanwell this weekend has been postponed due to the hosts’ involvement in the FA Cup.

Rovers are next in action on Tuesday as they entertain Aylesbury United at Sharpenhoe Road.

Meanwhile, Barton’s youngsters are in action this week as they visit Eynesbury Rovers in the FA Youth Cup.
