The 22-year old, who left Charlton in the summer, endured a tough start at Kenilworth Road after signing in January, before going on to score four goals in 15 appearances, including a match-winning brace in the victory over Oxford United.

Hatters boss Nathan Jones had originially declared an interest in signing the forward, but he has now headed to the U’s, with Cambridge boss Shaun Derry telling the club’s official website: “Joe brings to us an added goal threat going into the new Sky Bet League Two season.

“After a number of loans spent with both League One and League Two clubs, he has a real understanding of what this level is all about.

“Once again he fits the profile of this Football Club, he has loads of potential and we’re very much looking forward to working him.”
