After a heavy defeat at weekend, the defence was strengthened with the return of skipper Wayne Mills at right back and new signing Kyle Lincoln.

The visitors got off to the perfect start when Marcus Campbell scored from close range on two minutes.

Wembley’s tricky wingers were a handful but did not have any end product, while AFC and the league’s top scorer Jermaine Hall outpaced the hosts defence to make it 2-0 with 11 minutes of the first half remaining.

Looking to go into the break 2-0 up, a speculative long range strike from Jonathan Cooper seemed to take a unkind bounce in front of Wembley’s keeper Grigoli Zuzmatashuili and found its way into the back of the net as AFC went to the interval in fine spirits.

Hoping to consolidate at the start of the second half, this was not to be as Steven Eyango Bwanga reduced the arrears within a minute of the restart.

Three minutes later though, Hall broke clear to score his eighth goal of the season with a clinical finish.

The game was now end to end, as Wembley stepped up the pressure and were gifted a second, as confusion reigned when Louis Porcelli and Jack Lauder left the ball for each other and Zaine Gangaadeen nipped in to score with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Wembley sensed they could get a share of the spoils, as they threw everything at the AFC defence. They had a fair shout for a penalty when the ball struck Lauder’s hand but the ref deemed it was not intentional.

With the game coming to its conclusion, AFC could have stretched their lead as James Bishop came so close with a fine header and a rasping shot at goal.

AFC boss Steve Heath said: “It was so good to get back to winning ways and I will be able to sleep well.

“The lads played superb and I was proud of all of them. To come back from the disaster of Saturday shows they do have the character.

“I think the league is so wide open this season, as only two teams are unbeaten and everybody can beat each other.”
