FA YOUTH CUP: Barton go out to Shrimpers again

Barton Rovers were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup for a second time by Southend United last week, after a resounding 9-1 defeat.

With the FA ordering the original tie, that Barton lost 6-1, to be replayed due to an administrative error, Rovers showed signs of promise in the opening 15 minutes.

However, once the Shrimpers opened the scoring on 22 minutes and then doubled it moments later, it was one-way traffic.

They then moved 6-0 in front, before Keiran Reid pulled one back to replicate the original tie’s score line, only for Southend to bag three more and progress.

Barton chairman Darren Whiley said: “This was a game that no one apart from the FA wanted replayed.

“Southend beat us comfortably in the original tie even with a ineligible 14-year-old playing so to force the game to be played again was somewhat of an hindrance and a costly one at that.

“The gulf in levels was all to evident to see but our lads enjoyed the game and the atmosphere.

“Southend were great to host and treated us professionally, good luck to them at Newport County in the next round.”
