Teenage defender Akin Famewo became the latest to make his Football League debut since Jones took over, as he came on for the final seven minutes against Newport County on Tuesday night, after Johnny Mullins was dismissed.

Famewo joins the likes of Zane Banton, Frankie Musonda, James Justin and Tyreeq Bakinson who have all been used by Jones as McGeehan said: “I think the gaffer has been great for young lads. There are a lot of young lads – me, Jack (Marriott), Pelly (Mpanzu), Pottsy (Dan Potts) Chris (Walton) – and we’re getting trusted by the gaffer.

“He’s given us the roles that we’ve been given and we’re looking to improve the team.

“It’s great when you see the likes of JJ, Akin, Frankie hopefully and the other young lads who are pushing for places.

“It’s good to have that young energy rather than, perhaps in the past, we’ve had older players that are more unhappy and maybe have a bad attitude.

“Rather than being a young player who’s really pushing for it and doesn’t mind playing, coming out, playing and coming out, so it’s really good.”

Meanwhile, when asked about Famewo’s debut, boss Jones added: “It was only for seven minutes, but the kid’s going to have a career and we hope it’s with us.”
