AFC Dunstable had to come from a goal down for the second game in a row to maintain pace at the top of the SSML Premier Division on Saturday as they eventually eased past Oxhey Jets on Saturday.

The hosts made two changes were made from the midweek victory over London Tigers, as Nathan Frater came in for Leon Cashman, with keeper Ricky Perks picking up a slight knock, as Gary Malone was recalled.

AFC came close in the second minute as BJ Christie struck the upright, before Oxhey led on the quarter hour mark, Greg Usher giving Malone no chance from 20 yards.

A minute later AFC had the opportunity to draw level as Tyler Connor brought down Christie in the area, only for Nathan Frater to see his effort saved by Davis Boateng, with the striker blasting the rebound over.

However, the hosts didn’t let their heads drop as Josh Humbert chased down a lost cause and set up Christie to make it 1-1 on 25 minutes, while Frater soon amends for his miss seven minutes later, latching on to a Courtney Massay pass and firing past Boateng.

In the second period, AFC thought they had extended their lead after just 60 seconds as Jermaine Hall’s shot was well saved by Boetang only for Humbert to head home, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

However, he was not denied two minutes later, as despite Boateng somehow keeping out three efforts, he netted from close range.

AFC boss Steve Heath decided to replace Christie and Moses Olaleye for Brandon Carney and Roy Byron as Carney should have scored with his first touch, before finding the net with 10 minutes left from Charlie Gorman’s defence splitting pass.

The best goal of the game arrived on 86 minutes as Hall picked up the ball 15 yards from goal and beat two defenders before scoring.

Heath said: “After a tough game on Tuesday, we knew Oxhey would give everything.

“They have picked up a couple of wins recently as they look to stay in the Premier Division, but I thought my players responded well after going a goal behind.”

AFC are now in action at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night as they face Barton Rovers in the Beds Senior Cup final.
