AFC Dunstable began their Southern League home campaign with a stunning performance, as they swept aside Histon 4-0 on Tuesday night.

The Stutes, who were plying their trade in the Conference during recent years, could not cope with their hosts attacking flair, as they struggled to contain the AFC midfield and forward line.

Defender Newman Carney missed out after fracturing a bone in his foot during Saturday’s win over Uxbridge, so Leon Cashman slotted into an uncustomary position at left back, while BJ Christie and Jonathan Cooper took their places on the bench.

The OD’s were on the front foot straight from the kick of as Jermaine Hall drew a smart save from Histon keeper Nial Conroy.

AFC continued to press and from a corner, a powerful Jason Beck point blank header was somehow stopped by Conroy.

However, the breakthrough came 14 minutes into the half, when an attack was partially cleared by Histon but the loose ball was drilled home by Tom Silford.

AFC had the ball in the net again on the half hour when Roy Byron finished, but he was adjudged offside, although it was 2-0 just before the break, when Hall curled in a sublime strike.

In the second period, Histon created a couple of chances, but AFC were soon back on the attack once more, with Hall’s clever header hitting the crossbar.

Christie and Cooper replaced Silford and Brandon Carney with 20 minutes remaining and it did not take long before Christie made his mark, robbing Cameron Watson to round Conroy and slot home on 78 minutes.

Byron almost made it 4-0, narrowly failing to make contact, but Hall did have the last say, set up by Christie to double his account for the evening.

A delighted AFC boss Steve Heath said: “The lads were outstanding. I know Histon are having a lean time of it at the moment, but you can only concentrate on your own game.

“Next up is a tough encounter with Marlow on Saturday and the players will be buzzing but it is only two games into the season and I will need to keep them focused.”
