Gambin starts as Malta lose out to Slovakia

Hatters midfielder Luke Gambin played 73 minutes as Malta were beaten 3-1 by Slovakia in their World Cup Qualifying Group F at the National Stadium on Sunday night.

The 24-year-old won his seventh cap as Slovakia, including ex-Liverpool defender Martyn Skrtel, went ahead on two minutes through Vladimir Weiss.

Jean Paul Farrugia equalised on 14 minutes, with only Malta’s second goal of the campaign, before Jan Gregus put the visitors back in front on 41 minutes.

Gambin was eventually replaced by Bjorn Kristensen, before Adam Nemec made it 3-1 to Slovakia with six minutes to go, although he was sent off in stoppage time.

Malta next travel to Slovenia in June.
