Green hopes the signs are there for success at Luton next season

Hatters have endured a tough second season back in the Football League, as they sit 13th place in the table, eight points adrift of the play-offs.

An automatic promotion push has never materialised, despite being one of the bookies’ favourites at the start of the season, but Town are now getting an early look at how they will be expected to play under new manager Nathan Jones.

Green said: “If we can’t get that last bit of a promotion push then it’s a good structure to build on for next year.

“I know the fans don’t want to hear it being next year, but sometimes you’ve just got to look at it and think next year it will be a good push especially if the gaffer brings in his own players.”

Green isn’t completely giving up hopes on sneaking into the top seven this campaign though as he has experienced promotion from a fairly forlorn position when with Dagenham & Redbridge.

Then in the 2009-10 campaign, under former Town boss John Still, the east London side were five points off play-offs at this stage of the season and went on to finish seventh, before winning the final at Wembley.

Green continued: “We’re taking it one game at a time, that’s all you can do. We’ve had some good results and then we’ve had a little bit of a blip.

“If we can have a late surge, that’s got to be a consistent run of games, six, or seven unbeaten and we are capable of doing it, we can do it.

“So hopefully we can do it and have a little play-off push.

“I’ve done it before at another club, got into the playoffs on the last day and ended up going up so it can happen, it is possible.

“We’ve just got to believe and be confident, so hopefully we can do something this season and give the fans something to cheer about it.”

Hatters got back to winning ways at the weekend as they defeated Hartlepool United 2-1 at Kenilworth Road and Green hopes that result can breathe life into the final 14 matches.

He added: “The boys were buzzing with the win and those kind of results can kick-start seasons, although we need to get a good unbeaten run going where it’s six or seven games unbeaten and winning most of those games.”

Although it’s early days, Green has been impressed with the new manager too, adding: “I knew the gaffer from my days at Charlton, he was the U21 manager there.

“His team was brilliant at the time, I don’t think they lost a game all season.

“So I know a lot about what the gaffer wants to do and how he wants to play.

“He’s a very confident man and believes in his philosophy and it’s rubbing off on the boys, so it’s really good.”
