Green slump to Welwyn defeat

Molten Spartan SML Division One: Crawley Green 1 Welwyn Garden City 4

Crawley Green paid the penalty for ill-discipline as City took full advantage of the hosts being reduced to 10 men to run out comfortable 4-1 winners on Wednesday night.

The visitors arrived with a 100 per cent record in the league and they were quickly in front as Sean Downey conceded a free kick and Sean Brettel fired in an unstoppable shot to make it 1-0.

Crawley bounced back and were level four minutes later when Mark Smith and Stuart Strange combined to put through Aaron Wilson who calmly knocked the ball past Joe Croft in the City goal.

Two Daniel Mead corners were cleared by City before Jack Downes had an effort go wide, while Welwyn replied with a shot from Jason Caswell before Joel Norris had a drive blocked by Mark Smith.

After 24 minutes, home keeper Dean Bull saved well from Craig Arnott, while Sam Perrin then whipped in three successive corners as the pressure built but the Crawley defence stood firm.

City continued to press and a Perrin cross hit the bar and bounced to safety after 40 minutes.

Just before the break Crawley were reduced to 10 men when Ricky Clark needlessly collected 2 yellow cards.

In the second half City took full advantage as they scored three goals in 12 minutes to kill the game.

Within a minute of the kick off poor Crawley defending let in Norris who fired past Bull to make it 2-1.

Norris turned provider seven minutes later when he put through Arnott to score.

Crawley replied with a fierce shot from Stuart Strange which was well saved by Croft, but Welwyn had a fourth thanks to Jason Caswell.
