The Town chief revealed this month he wanted to appoint the vastly experienced 62-year-old, who he worked with while at Charlton, as his number two at Kenilworth Road.

When asked if there had been further discussions, Jones said: “I speak to him on a regular basis, hopefully we might have some news for you on that in the forthcoming days.

“He’s someone I’d really like to bring in, he’s a good friend, a bit of a mentor for me and his experience would be phenomenal for Luton Town.

“If there’s something to be done there, we’d like to do it, but things are ongoing, there’s no great great hurry.

“He’s had a few personal things, that’s why he left Leeds, for him to jump straight back into something, I think he might not be ready to do that, so we’ll gauge it.

“But he’s someone I would like to bring to the club, I’ll make no bones about it. His experience, his knowledge, how he goes about stuff, complements my work and Kevin Nugent’s work very well and I think he’d be a real coup for the club as well.

“To have someone like that with that knowledge of what he does and also because he’s a fantastic academy man as well.

“Some of his academies, Leeds, Forest, Charlton have produced some wonderful, wonderful individuals and teams.

“So I think that would be a real valuable asset, that’s if we can do something. I don’t want to publicly come out and say ‘yes’, but he’s someone that Luton Town would be interested in if something can be done.”
