Hatters rated v Colchester United

Matt Macey: 6 - Afforded little protection from his defence when balls were whipped in and although made two decent stops, might have done better when trying to prevent U's second from crossing the line.

Stephen O’Donnell: 5.5 - With Hatters on the back foot for much of the opening period, had his hands full with the constant threat of Colchester’s dangerous wideman Dickenson.

Alan Sheehan: 6 - Lost out to Porter for the opening goal and couldn’t cut off cross for second, but did his best to get Luton going in the second half. One superb run saw him almost beat the entire home defence, while he brought out a good stop from Walker too.

Scott Cuthbert: 6 - Rare shaky first period from the usually rock solid skipper who gave possession away far too cheaply at times. Can’t be happy with the simplicity with which Colchester scored from both crosses, and almost netted from another, despite the clear warnings beforehand.

Glen Rea: 5.5 - Part of a defence that didn’t look at all comfortable in the first period, such was the ease that Colchester opened them up to move 2-0 in front. Still guilty of diving in at times to give away silly free kicks in his eagerness to win back possession.

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu: 6.5 - Like the rest of his team-mates, couldn’t get going in the first half at all. Became more of a threat in the second period as Luton bossed proceedings, starting a number of moves off, although his last pass went astray at times.

Jake Gray: 5 - Could only feel for him after being taken off on 38 minutes as part of a tactical reshuffle. Far from the worst out there too and couldn’t hide his obvious and acceptable frustration when his number went up.

Jordan Cook: 4.5 - Another match where he had very little impact on proceedings in an attacking sense and saw his afternoon ended early with what looked like a hamstring injury.

Lawson D’Ath: 7 - One of the very few bright points of a thoroughly frustrating first period for the Hatters. Looked a threat whenever on the ball and continued to do so after the interval too as Luton tried to find a way back into the game.

Jack Marriott: 5.5 - Despite having little or no service during his hour, still looks a shadow of last season’s player. Often having to receive the ball with his back to goal, when striker is at his best, racing on to through balls behind the defence.

Isaac Vassell (STAR MAN): 7 - Kept going for the entire match and got the goal his all-round effort deserved in stoppage time to take him to double figures for the season, but alas it was too little too late.

James Justin (SUB): 6.5 - His introduction saw Luton start to get to grips with proceedings and came within inches of a first career goal, denied by a superb goal-line clearance from Elokobi.

Ollie Palmer (SUB): 6 - On to try and and boost Town’s attacking play, but his aerial threat was well contained by Eastman.

Olly Lee (SUB): 5 - Last throw of the dice as he couldn’t unlock the hosts defence.
