The 22-year-old has become Hatters boss Nathan Jones’ second signing of the transfer window, following Bradford City defender Alan Sheehan, who penned a similar deal last week.

Pigott has spent the last 12 months on loan at Southend, who he helped win promotion from League Two via the play-offs last season, scoring the Shrimpers’ last-gasp extra-time equaliser against Wycombe in May and also netting in the penalty shoot out.

The striker scored seven goals for Southend last season, plus three in a loan spell at Newport County too.

He returned to Roots Hall this year, netting five goals in 28 appearances, although only 13 of those were starts.

A product of the Charlton academy, Pigott rose through the ranks when Jones was in charge of the U21 side at the Valley, scoring on his Addicks debut in a 4-0 League Cup win over Oxford in 2013.

Pigott has also enjoyed time out on loan at Bromley and Gillingham, and goes straight into the Hatters squad to face Notts County on Saturday.

Boss Jones told the club’s official website: “I’ve worked before Joe before. He’s an excellent young striker who has scored goals wherever he has been.

“He’s been brought into the club because he is the type of player we want here. He fits all of our criteria and adds competition to an area we are already very strong in.

“I’m delighted to have been able to bring Joe here and the fact we have been able to beat other clubs to his signature speaks volumes about this club.”
